Donald Richie's 'Tokyo Megacity' Book

Donald Richie is probably the world's greatest authority on Japan. Having lived here most of his life, and written over 40 books on the country, he knows a lot about this small island. Because of him, Westerners know about Kurosawa and Ozu, and many other Japanese movie directors and movies. He writes beautifully, accurately and intelligently about all things Japanese. (He also makes his own movies, writes music and paints, although these are simply hobbies for him.) I've had the privilege to know Donald, and also to have photographed him. He's now 86, and has just released his new book, 'Tokyo Megacity.' I got a call from Tuttle, the publisher, saying that Donald was in the hospital, but that he wanted them to use my picture on the book jacket, because it was his favorite image of himself. I was honored, since he's been photographed innumerable times, and there are other very nice pictures of him, too. So, here's to Donald - to his latest achievement (a darn good read, by the way), his health, and the enjoyment that his books bring to so many people!
